The Structure of a custom residence is often an afterthought.  Once the layout and style have been chosen, a structural system is applied to “make it work.”  NvsN design strives to be better than that.  During our design process, we work closely with our Structural Engineers to determine whether the structural system is completely hidden or becomes a part of the aesthetic.  Wood beams, structural steel and even concrete have exceptional decorative as well as purely utilitarian qualities.  Because every client and application are unique, the implementation of the structural system can direct the design or fade away into the background.

It is essential to choose the correct combination of elements in a structural system to ensure the stability, maintenance requirements, and longevity of any project.   These determinations affect the cost, comfort and overall efficiency of the home.  Wood framing and concrete block are typical universal construction methods.  Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) and structural insulated panels (SIPs) are quickly becoming quality alternatives to conventional structural systems in terms of uniformity and insulation value.  Structural steel allows for vast open spaces unimpeded by supporting walls.

By carefully planning for and employing an appropriate structural system our designs are not restricted by the limitations of standard 2x6 construction.
